Gerald Ohta Receives APHA Award at Conference

HPHA’s Affiliate Representative to the Governing Council (ARGC), Gerald Ohta, received the Committee on Affiliates 2008 Chair’s Citation at this year’s APHA conference in October. The award recognizes his exemplary work with the Committee on Affiliates (CoA). For nearly 30 years, gohtaaward.jpgGerald has been a public health leader, advocate and ambassador for Hawai‘i on the National Public Health Scene. After serving as the Hawai‘i Public Health Association President from 1980 to 1982, he later rejoined the HPHA Board and has served as the ARGC since 1999. He has also been a member of the CoA, the APHA Nominating Committee and the APHA Joint Policy Committee.

Gerald has served as key link between public health workers in Hawai‘i and APHA Leadership, and has continuously advocated for APHA recognition of the unique public health issues faced by Hawai‘i, Alaska, and other Western states in his region. He also works diligently to keep the public health workforce in Hawai‘i informed on both local and national public health issues on everything from policy debates to training resources for our local public health workforce. The HPHA Board congratulates Gerald on his receipt of this well deserved award.
